A blood glucose test is used to measure the amount of glucose present in the sample collected from a patient who is suspected of being in their pre-diabetic stage. The test can also be prescribed by a doctor for a patient who is receiving treatment for diabetes in a bid to gauge whether the treatment is working or not.
When one consumes carbohydrate-rich food items, the body breaks down the carbohydrates to turn the same into energy. When carbohydrate is broken down, the resulting molecules are glucose. A sample of blood will be collected from a patient using a small needle from any of the veins present in the arms of the patient. After that, the sample will be tested using the hexokinase method.
A fasting glucose test is done when a person wants to know whether they have type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or gestational diabetes. The hexokinase method is one of the most accurate and efficient diagnostic methods that help medical professionals quantify the glucose concentration in the blood sample.
A fasting plasma glucose test is used to determine whether the blood sugar level of the patient is in the normal range of 99 mg/dL or lower. If that is not the case then the patient might be in their pre-diabetic stage. If the blood sugar level is above 126 mg/dL then the patient is suffering from diabetes.
The fasting plasma glucose normal range is 99 mg/dL or lower. If the level is above 100 to 125 mg/dL then the patient is pre-diabetic. If the level is above 126 mg/dL then the patient is diabetic.
For a fasting blood sugar test, do not eat or drink anything other than water for at least 8 hours before the blood sample is taken. If you have diabetes, you may be asked to wait until you have had your blood tested before you take your morning dose of insulin or diabetes medicine. These steps are necessary to keep your fasting plasma glucose levels under control.
Before a fasting plasma glucose test, the patient should eat or drink anything else than water in limited amounts for at least 8 hours before the blood sample is drawn from their body. If the person is diabetic then apart from following the instruction mentioned above, they must also refrain from taking diabetes medication or insulin shots.

People who have high sugar levels in their blood even when they have fasted indicate that they are suffering from hyperglycemia. If the blood sugar levels are in the normal range then it indicates that the person is not suffering from diabetes or that the treatment they have been prescribed by their doctor is working.
