Book SGPT/ALT (ALANINE TRANSAMINASE) test in Gulbarga
Patient Preparation:No special preparation is required
The SGPT (ALT) test is done to check and measure damages in liver if any.
Why Take this Test
The ALT enzyme is mainly found in your liver. Your body utilises ALT to help breakdown food into energy. Usually, the ALT levels in your body are low, but in case of a liver damage, more of ALT than required is released into your blood leading to increased levels resulting in stomach pain and swelling, nausea, vomiting, dark coloured urine and itchy skin.
If you are already diagnosed with liver disease, the ALT test can help check on the progress of the medical treatments.
Is this Test For You
SGPT is the measure of liver function; i.e. to detect liver damage. SGPT is almost always ordered along with SGOT. Your doctor may order the test for you if he detects the symptoms of a liver disorder which include weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling, pain, jaundice etc.
More Information
SGPT also called as Alanine Transaminase (ALT) is an enzyme primarily associated with the liver. Significantly elevated levels of SGPT are predominantly suggestive of liver disorders, but can indicate several heart diseases, such as congestive heart failure too.
SGPT, just like SGOT, is yet another important enzyme in amino acid metabolism and an important test to measure liver health. However, it's a better marker for liver damage than SGOT, and said to be liver specific.
